STORY ANIMATICS

A story animatic is essentially an animated storyboard. They're created roughly and quickly, usually incorporating a number of techniques and a hodge-podge of assorted assets. The assets might include drawings cut from a Story Artist's board* or a piece of a digital painting from the Design Dept*. Often they're created by the Animatics Artist him/herself and then animated using whichever software package seems best suited to the task. Animatics serve a variety of purposes. Sometimes a sequence may call for complex camera work or choreography that would be difficult to capture in a storyboard. Other times, an animatic might offer a way to quickly work out the timing of an action sequence, for example. Animatics also allow us to incorporate the "acting" performances of characters - much easier to capture with drawings than with unrigged, pre-vis character models. Sometimes we make them just to add some production value to the story reels.
